Furniture Bank of Central Ohio provides free furniture to central Ohio families and individuals struggling with poverty and other severe life challenges. We collect, build, store, and deliver various furniture items to people living in bare or sparsely furnished housing. Most of the families served live in or near downtown Columbus, Ohio, where poverty and homelessness are at the highest levels. Our goal is for all central Ohio families to live in furnished homes, thereby relieving suffering, strengthening family units, improving quality of life and building a better community. In 2014, the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio served 4,549 families by providing them with 14-16 pieces of essential furniture.
When you donate furniture to the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio, you are not only helping people in need, you are also recycling and joining us in preventing the 70,000+ solid items that the we collect each year from ending up in a landfill. This amount of furniture would equate to a 28-foot high pile, covering one acre and more than 45,000 cubic yards that is kept out of the landfill – about 405 semi-trailers packed full of furniture recycled each year. The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) awarded the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio the 2007 Emerald Award for partnership and collaboration with local agencies and the City of Columbus for our recycling effort. We are also a member of Green Spot, part of the Get Green Columbus initiative to inform and engage; reduce, reuse, and recycle; conserve energy; conserve water; and streamline transportation.
